PC Setup and Update Guide
Instructional Manual for New and Existing Employees
Overview
This guide provides step-by-step instructions for setting up a new company PC and maintaining regular software updates. Follow all steps carefully to ensure your device is properly configured and up to date.
Who This Guide Is For
- All new hires receiving a new company PC
- Existing employees replacing their PC with a new one
Update Schedule
To keep your PC secure and running efficiently, follow the update schedule below:
First Two Weeks: Run updates daily
After Two Weeks: Run updates once per week on Friday at end of day (EOD)
Note: Add a recurring reminder to your Outlook calendar to update all technology and restart your PC on Fridays.
Section 1: Initial PC Setup
Follow these steps when you first receive your new company laptop:
- Plug in the power adapter to ensure the laptop has sufficient power during setup.
- Press the power button to turn on the laptop.
- Allow the PC to fully boot up and load into the setup process. This may take a few minutes.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the initial personalization of your device.
Note: Do not interrupt the boot process or close the laptop during initial setup.
Section 2: Personalizing Your PC
Once your PC has loaded into the main screen, follow these steps to personalize your settings and improve efficiency for your role:
Step 1: Open the Start Menu
Locate the Start Menu at the bottom of your screen. It is positioned next to the search window in your taskbar.
Step 2: Access System Settings
Once the Start Menu window opens, locate the gear icon (Settings) and click on it to open the Settings window.
Step 3: Navigate to Windows Update
In the Settings window, a menu will appear on the left-hand side. Locate and click on "Windows Update" from the menu options.
Step 4: Check for Updates
At the top of the Windows Update page, locate the "Check for Updates" button and click on it to begin scanning for available updates.
Note: Your screen will display a loading indicator while it searches for updates. This is normal.
Step 5: Review and Install Updates
If updates are available, each update will appear in a list along with its current installation status on the right side of the screen. Allow all updates to install completely before proceeding.
Section 3: Installing Optional Updates
After completing the standard updates, follow these steps to check for and install any additional optional updates:
Step 1: Open Advanced Options
From the Windows Update page, scroll down and click on "Advanced Options" to open the advanced settings page.
Step 2: Review Optional Updates
On the Advanced Options page, locate the "Optional Updates" section. Review the list to determine if any additional updates are available for your device.
Step 3: Install Optional Updates
If optional updates are listed, click to open the section and reveal the full list. Select all available options and proceed with the installation.
Note: Optional updates may include driver updates, firmware updates, or additional system improvements. It is recommended to install all available optional updates for optimal performance.
Section 4: Ongoing Maintenance Reminders
To keep your PC running at peak performance, follow these ongoing best practices:
- Set a recurring Outlook calendar reminder every Friday at EOD to check for and install updates.
- Always restart your PC after completing updates to ensure all changes take effect.
- Do not skip your weekly update check, as updates include important security patches.
- If you experience any issues during the update process, contact your IT team for support.
